Beginning-Middle of War
On September 1, 1939, Germany invaded Poland which started world conflagration. Then when Pearl Harbor was bombed on December 7, 1941, the US declared war on Japan. After the Normandy invasion in 1944, there was over 400,000 German POWs in 500 camps in the United States.
End of War
Germany had surrendered unconditionally on May 7, 1945, but Japan was still fighting.That was until the US dropped atomic bombs on 2 of their cities. The first bomb was carried by a B-29 bomber called the Enola Gay. It was dropped at 8:15 on August 6, 1945, in Hiroshima. It killed thousands of people in under a second. The total death toll was between 80,000 and 140,000. On August 9, the second bomb was dropped. The second bomb was supposed to hit the city of Kokura but there was bad weather and they could not find their target so they dropped it on Nagasaki. The death toll was 35,000 to 70,000. Japan then surrendered on August 14, 1945.
